Compulsive Behavior in Dogs

A compulsive behavior in dogs can be a challenge to determine the exact root cause and then find the solution. You will first need to identify the repeat behaviors which occur during the waking hours of your dog.

Did you know that there are specific breeds that have been known or will most likely develop compulsive behavior?  Yes, the Doberman Pinschers, Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers have excessive licking problems also known as lick dermatitis or lick granuloma.  The Bull Terriers have a tendency to spin round and round and the German Shepherds love to chase their tails continuously.

The most common cause for compulsive behavior in dogs is a stressful environment or from anxiety.  Here are a few contributing factors that can lead to compulsive behavior:

  • Frequently tied up or confined in a small area.
  • A long separation from a companion
  • Continuous aggression from another dog
  • Lack of socialization with other dogs or people
  • A precious frightening experience
  • Physical abuse or punishment
First you should rule out any underlying medical problems or other physical situations that might trigger the compulsive behavior and you should consult with your veterinarian to develop treatment plan.

If you dog has received a clean bill of health from your veterinarian, your next challenge will be to identify the stressful situations and remove this from your dog's environment.

The last and final challenge will be to distract your dog with positive reinforcement (rewarding your dog for good behavior) and in turn you will develop a stronger relationship with your dog.

You might want to try introducing your dog with a new squeaky toy, peanut butter in a Kong chew toy, or a rawhide bone to chew.

You want your dog to be happy!

Waggin Train Chicken Jerky

Nestle Purina Pet Care Co has confirmed that the Waggin Train Chicken Jerky treats are actually “Made In China” and further state that the facilities are modeled after the U.S. Department of Agriculture standards of quality, under stringent safety and sanitary guidelines.
Further they do have a posting under FAQ section on their website the fact that the FDA on 11/18/11 and 3/9/2012 stated that there is a possibility of illness of dogs associated with the chicken jerky.
As a dog owner, it will be your decision to purchase any dog treats or food in where it is "Made in China".
My recommendation is for you to read the fine print and the label to make a prudent decision on the health and well being of your dog.

Rescue Dog Star on Syfy's Ghost Hunter

The Rescue Dog Star on Syfy's Ghost Hunter is Maddie, she is an Australian Cattle Dog/German Sheppard Mix who was rescued by Jason Hawkes from a high kill shelter in Tennessee.

She has proven herself as an asset by accompanying the entire crew of Ghost Hunter's on each paranormal investigation.

There are many classes of dog behavior based on genetics, working, hunting, herding, service and guide.

It is very important for you to know the behavior traits on your dog, so that you can prevent them being bored and mischeavious.  They need to have a "job" to do, which will make them feel that they have a purpose and that they will become a loving member of your family.
